Leo B. Koskelin

Leo B. Koskelin, 89, Eagle River, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 12, 2016, with family at his side after a brief illness.
Leo was born the son of Frank and Selma (Wiirtenen) Koskelin on Aug. 19, 1926.
Leo was joined in marriage to Lillian M. Shaw on April 10, 1948.
Leo began operating the family farm in 1948, and continued until the mid-’60s. He then opened “Leo’s Sauna,” a Finnish steam bath on Leo’s Lake, a very well-accepted business that thrived for many years.
Leo worked for 24 years as a custodian at Eagle River High School and drove school bus for 30 years. He considered the passengers “his kids” and looked forward to seeing them grow into adulthood.
Leo trained himself to be a skilled craftsman and carpenter as well as an accomplished mason. Leo was skilled enough to build the current family home, doing all the block work and carpentry. As busy as this kept him, he and his bride, Lillian, were also active in Boy Scouts and strong 4-H advocates.
Leo did his civic duty as a town of Lincoln supervisor for 10 years, all the while enjoying the great outdoors. He loved to watch the wildlife that walked past his little castle, from the feathered friends at the feeder to the deer, turkeys, geese and the occasional bear or two that liked the bird food as much as the birds.
Leo was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoor enthusiast. He passed these treasured attributes on to the rest of the Koskelin Klan in addition to teaching the values of the air, water, trees and the land we all share. In his retirement years he relished the opportunity to teach his fishing skills to his grandchildren or sit by the fireplace with a great-grandchild or two on his lap exchanging smiles and memories.
Leo is survived by his wife, Lillian; his children, Susan (Neil) Johnston, David (Deb), Donald (UnMi), Joy and Kathy (Jeff) Hotovec; as well as grandchildren, Sara, Jamie, Kristopher (Tonya), Nathan, Nicole (Jordan), Marie (Adam), Rachel, Alan (Jill) and Jessica (Ben); and great-grandchildren, Thomas, Andrew, Colin, Sebastian, Aubrey, Oliver, Sylvia, Aurelia, Bristol and Lillian; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and his sister, Edith.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Selma; brothers, Edward, Wayne, Nels, Arvi, Isaac (Bill) and Elmer (Toy); sisters, Esther and Irene; and son, Steven.
A family memorial was held at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River, Wis.

Donald Frank Koranda of Eagle River, Wis., joined his heavenly family on Sunday, March 6, 2016. He was 73.
When he was just 21 years old Don lost both his parents within six months of each other. Shortly after he met and later married his first wife, Regina Reilly, becoming a trusted and loyal member of the extended Reilly family.
Don and Regina raised their three children, Scott, Michelle and Brian in Chicago, later moving to Woodruff in 1975.
Don led the Cub Scouts, coached Little League, and visited the public library with his children every week.
In 1987 Don married E. Jean (Nagle) Hanneman of Eagle River and took the role of a loving father to step-daughters, Lori and Karol.  His five children never went without and always knew their father was on their side.
Don worked hard his entire life.  In Chicago, Don discovered his love of drafting and engineering at the Crane Co. After moving to Woodruff, Don tried his hand at a few different trades but eventually returned to engineering and became a Senior Engineering Technician at Marathon Electric in Wausau, Wis.

Well into his retirement Don took classes at North Central Technical College and later taught a semester of technical drawing at the Antigo campus.
Don retired in 2007, and quickly filled his days with biking, tending to his hosta garden and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts and plays.
Don treasured staying in touch. Weekends were spent traveling to visit his cousins in Michigan, his children’s families in Wauwatosa, Minneapolis or Crandon, or his brother in Rochester. He traveled as far as Georgia and Hawaii to visit family.
Later when unable to travel, Don took full advantage of evening and weekend minutes to call his children, cousins and friends, keeping all of us centered on family.  His Sunday evening calls were a constant and will be dearly missed by all.
Don was a member of the Holy Catholic Family Church in Woodruff and helped coordinate Summerfest. More recently he led introductory computing classes for seniors.

William L. Ludwig

William L. Ludwig passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016, on his birthday. He was 89 years old.
Bill was born in Plymouth, Wis., and moved with his family when 9 years old to Eagle River, Wis. He was one of six children and had very fond memories of his childhood growing up in a loving, happy and talented musical family.
He loved sports and his Model T, and established many lifelong friends in this area.
He graduated in 1944, from Eagle River High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
Upon returning home he began his college career in Stevens Point, and while there he met the love of his life, Shirley Thompson, and they were married in 1948. He always said he knew the moment he met her, she was the best, and throughout their 68-year marriage his favorite phrase was, “Shirl, you’re the best!”
Bill later transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in 1951 with a BS in agriculture. He began his career with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service as a soil scientist and worked in Madison, Wausau, Ashland, Stratford, Neillsville and Rhinelander, Wis., and out of state at Athens, Ga., and Des Moines, Iowa.
While in Neillsville he played drums with the Howie Sturtz Orchestra for 12 years, appeared often on TV’s Dairyland Jubilee, and recorded four albums. Bill loved the Big Band era music and enjoyed the heck outta playing with a band.
In Neillsville, he and Shirley occupied free time snowmobiling, cross-country and downhill skiing with the kids; and it was also there he obtained his private pilot’s license and became active with the Civil Air Patrol. Frequently eating dinner late, because Bill was always headed to a meeting, as he was forever on a board of directors or a committee most of his life and even into retirement — too many to list. But he enjoyed his role as a public servant and was always happy and willing to help others.
Bill illuminated the lives of everyone he met with his strong handshake and big smile . . . a true reflection of his honest and kind soul.
After retiring in 1984 from the SCS, and with all the girls gone, he and Shirley moved to Eagle River, where Bill began his second career as a strawberry farmer. He worked tirelessly perfecting the biggest, most delicious strawberry he could. He loved working on his land! And “weather permitting,” he was out hoeing, plowing, irrigating, bulldozing or just walking around assessing things, sun up to sundown. Bill loved to be outdoors and was always concerned about the protection of the environment and its natural resources.
Over the last six months, Bill fought his battle so determinedly, and struggled stoically to remain independent and rational, but in the end succumbed to the insidious Alzheimer’s disease.
Bill (or Lowell to family) will be deeply missed, but leaves many cherished memories to his wife, Shirley, and their three daughters, Nancy (Scott) Dobrzynski, Amy (Mike) Florence and Janice (Gary) Gardner; five grandchildren, Grant (Mary) Greenwood, Greg Greenwood, Gerrid Greenwood, Seth Hansen and Grace Florence; and one great-grandchild, Gabriella Santos; siblings, Andrew (Kay) Ludwig Jr. and sister, May (Bob) Oberg.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Andrew Ludwig Sr.; one sister, Audrey (Frank) Carter; and two brothers, Jerome (Donna) Ludwig and Bernard (Donna) Ludwig.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1, at First Congregational United Church of  Christ, 105 N. First Street, Eagle River, Wis., with Pastor Mary Anne Biggs officiating. Viewing 10 a.m., service at 11 a.m., with a light lunch to follow.
