Ronald C. Jesse Sr.

Ronald C. Jesse Sr., a 40-year resident of Eagle River, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at his home. He was 81.
Mr. Jesse was born July 20, 1934, in Chicago, Ill., to Charles and Elizabeth Jesse. 
He married Darlene Oct. 25, 1958, in Clintonville. 
He worked as a carpenter for many years. 
Mr. Jesse enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, cooking, mushroom picking and above all, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. 
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-’56 and was a lifetime member of the Eagle River Veterans of Foreign Wars. 
Mr. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel David; one sister, Serna Lee Pitts; and one brother, Thomas. 
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Eagle River; three daughters, Christine Ann (Dale Nanstad) Jesse of Edgerton; Sherry M. Morreau of Denison, Iowa; and Lisa Lynn (Michael Chevalier) Martinez of Lake Tomahawk; three sons, Ronald Charles Jr. (Shirley) of Conover; Thomas Allen (Jeng) of Bremerton, Wash.; and Jamie (Shawna) of Muskego; one brother, Daniel (Sherry) of Wauconda, Ill.; one sister, Val Supol of Franklin Park, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to the time of service. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Sandra Ann Albrecht

Sandra Ann Albrecht, of Eagle River, died Thursday, March 24, 2016, with her family by her side. She was 75.
Mrs. Albrecht was born April 16, 1940, in Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Margaret Syring; and two brothers, Ralph and Paul.
Mrs. Albrecht is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter; two daughters, Donna (Rod) Montezon and Amy  (Drew) LaFrombois; two sons, Daniel (Lisa) and Randy (Jody); 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 9, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Eagle River. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m., with service and a luncheon to follow.  
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for cards and a special memory of Mrs. Albrecht.

Elizabeth Satran

Elizabeth Jane (Trippel) Satran, 87, died March 20, 2016, at Oakwood Village, Madison, where she had been a resident for several years.
She was the wife of the late Daniel Satran Sr. who had been a newspaper publisher and editor in Eagle River and a writer in Algoma, and who was widely known and respected throughout the state.
While in Eagle River, she was actively involved in the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library, a member of the board of directors. She was a proofreader at the Algoma Record Herald while her husband was an editor and writer there.
She was a graduate of a Milwaukee secretarial school when she met her husband-to-be on a blind date in the late 1940s.
Even though a native of Mishawaka, Ind., she became a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers and UW-Madison teams, watching games even after she became an Oakwood resident.
Her son John of Madison, was a constant help as a caregiver to both of his parents.
Her seven other children, their spouses and children are Dan Jr., Bayfield (Dan III and Jessie and her husband, Zac Rohrer); Jane Guldan, Marshfield (husband, Mike Guldan, Renae and Ryan); Richard, Montclair, N.J. (Rory, her husband, Nathaniel Kilcer, and Joe and Owen); Jone Fulkerson, Gainesville, Fla. (Libby and Charley); Tom, Manitowoc, (Hannah, Lee, Terry, Nic and Mariah); Mary “Mitzi” Satran, Glastonbury, Conn. (Georgia and Louisa); and Tim, Whitefish Bay (Marley, Tripp and Daisy).
Other survivors are sisters, Barbara O'Keefe, Chicago, and Sarah Funck, Long Beach, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Angela Trippel, Misha­wa­ka, and Lois Satran, New Berlin; many nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and great-grandchildren, Emma and Isaac Rohrer, and Plum Kilcer.
A memorial service will be Saturday, April 16, at 11:30 in the Oakwood chapel, 6201 Mineral Point Rd., Madison.
Testimonies in her name can be made out to the Ahlzeimer’s Assoc. and sent to her son, John, at 2114 Harley Drive, Madison, WI 53711.

Robert Walter Obenberger

Robert Walter Obenberger, 73, of Green Bay, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Friday, March 25, 2016, after a four-year battle with melanoma. He was surrounded by his loving family at the Unity Hospice Residence.
Robert was born on July 29, 1942, in West Bend, Wis.
He grew up in Hartford, Wis., where he attended high school and graduated in 1960. He went on to earn a Business  degree at UW-Whitewater in 1964, a Master’s degree at Northern Illinois University in 1966, and a Doctorate degree at Louisiana State University in 1974.
On Aug. 30, 1969, Robert married Elizabeth Evans in Hobart, Ind.
Education was very important to Robert and he was passionate about teaching. Most of his 38-year career was spent at UW-Green Bay where he taught marketing for 27 years before retiring as Associate Professor Emeritus.
Robert cared deeply about his students and stayed in contact with many of them following their careers and speaking proudly of them to his friends and family.
Robert enjoyed spending time on the lake in Three Lakes, Wis. He vacationed there with his family in his early years and eventually built a cabin where he enjoyed boating and driving his Jeep in the forest.
During retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, reading, model railroading and was an avid fan of the Packers, auto racing and LSU sports.
Robert is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son, Kurt (Heather) of Menomonie; and grandchildren, Tyler and Grayson; sister, Kay Baetz; and brother-in-law, Robert Baetz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mildred Obenberger; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Irene Evans.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Pfotenhauer Funeral Home East, 2379 East Mason St., Green Bay.

Joan Gottsacker

Joan Gottsacker, a resident of Eagle River, formerly of Sheboygan and Oshkosh, died Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Dianne’s Home in the Northwoods after she died.  She was 86.
Ms. Gottsacker was born  July 21, 1929, in Sheboygan, the eldest daughter of Roman J. and Marion G. Gottsacker. 
During her years as a Springfield Franciscan sister, Ms. Gottsacker began her nursing career. Later she received her bachelor of science in nursing in Madison, and then attended the University of Maryland for her master’s degree. 
She taught at Oshkosh until her retirement in 1994, having received recognition for outstanding teaching in clinical nursing. During these same years she also worked at Mercy Medical Hospital. 
Ms. Gottsacker is survived by one sister, Sister Edith Gottsacker, of Eagle River; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Gottsacker, of Eagle River; and six nephews and their families. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Romaine Draughon; one brother, James; and her former husband, David Nitkowski.

Andrew Rodney Billerbeck

Andrew, age 29, the son of Angela Jo Billerbeck and stepfather, Ronald Bochek, was born Nov. 11, 1986, and left for Heaven on April 2, 2016, due to Glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer.
He graduated high school in Gladstone, Mich., where he enjoyed a successful high school career in drama, choir, and barbershop quartet, which he continued after graduation.
Andrew graduated from college in Minnesota with a degree in radio broadcasting, then worked at a station in Montana for a time before moving back to the area when his beloved grandpa, Rod, died.
Shortly after, he went to Rockford, Ill., to attend a Christian conference and decided to stay to attend a community church where he could increase his growth in his Christian faith.
He lived in Rockford  until his cancer diagnosis in November of 2015, then moved to Eagle River, Wis., to be near his mom for his care.
He became involved at Abundant Life Church and was blessed by his Rooted church group. 
Andrew was a spiritual guy who put God first in his life. This was never more apparent than during his cancer ordeal, when he remained peaceful and hopeful and unafraid because of his faith.
He always had a heart for the elderly, veterans and rescue animals, enjoyed anonymously blessing people he didn’t know by paying their restaurant tab, and promoted and shared the Puppy Rescue Mission/Sasha’s Legacy rescue site for stray dogs from Afghanistan, where they adopted their quirky dog, Daisy; she had been a great friend to Andrew while he was sick and she loved him so very much. 
Andrew is survived by his mother, Angela Jo, and step­father, Ronald Bochek; his brother, Elijah Bochek; and sister, Hannah Billerbeck; cousins, Erika Miller (Bart), Ryan Jacobson (Sheena), Alis­sa Jacobson (Brian Schwalbach), Victoria Newbauer (Jason), and Ashley Leist (Cody); and eight nieces and nephews; aunts, Susan Wy­song, Sally Jacobson (Steven) and Patricia Billerbeck.  
He was preceded to Heaven by grandparents, Rodney and Eileen Billerbeck; uncle, Rodney Billerbeck Jr.; and cousin, Jeremy Wysong.  
Visitation will be held at the Ephraim Moravian Church Friday, April 8, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. with service and lunch to follow at 11 a.m.

The Rev. William F. Speerstra

The Rev. William Frederich Speerstra died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home in Minocqua. He was 83.
Mr. Speerstra was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Stevens Point, to Walter and Clara (née Kujawa).
He attended St. Stephen’s Elementary School and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point. He then attended St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary and St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee.  
After serving as pastor for St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Land O’ Lakes, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Phelps, Speerstra retired from priestly active ministry June 1, 1998.
He is survived by one sister, Gretchen, of Madison.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff April 11, with Bishop James Powers presiding. 
Burial took place in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Stevens Point.

Richard A. Paulton Jr.

Richard A. Paulton Jr., of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Phelps, died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, after an extended illness. He was 64.
Mr. Paulton graduated from Phelps High School in 1970. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mildred Paulton, of Phelps; and one son, Christopher.
Mr. Paulton is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Ellen; three sons, Richard, Jessie and Earl; one sister, Cynthia Sullivan, of Eagle River; 11 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Private services were held in Royal Palm Beach.

Audrey Marie Meurer

MADISON — Audrey Marie Meurer, age 89, passed away on March 22, 2016, at her home.
Audrey was born on May 28, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Edward and Eleanor (Schirmbrand) Cauley.
She is survived by her husband, Fred; her three children, Kathy (Tom) Eimermann of Stillwater, Minn., Tom Meurer of Cushing, Wis., and Todd (Holly Dowling) Meurer of Verona, Wis.; five grandchildren, Tim, Jill, Brent, Cauley and Cullen; and seven great-grandchildren, Wade, Malorie, Mitchell, Jayne, Nolan, Ashley and Avery. Audrey is also survived by her sister, Carol Doyle of Baraboo, Wis.
Audrey married Fred Meurer on June 17, 1944, in San Marcus, Texas, while he was serving in the Army Air Corps, and lived in California while he was stationed there during World War II.
After the war they returned to Wisconsin, where they lived in Baraboo, Milwaukee, Elm Grove, Three Lakes and Madison.
After the youngest of their three children started school, Audrey went to work for the JC Penney Co. in their district office where she rose to the position of executive secretary for the district manager.
In 1989, she retired from JC Penney and she and Fred moved to Three Lakes, where they built a home on Planting Ground Lake. There, she was actively involved in the Three Lakes Women’s Club and the Oneida County Area Agency on Aging. In 1999, they moved to Madison, to be closer to their family.
Through the years, Audrey was an outstanding party hostess and fabulous cook. She was always stylishly dressed and enjoyed painting with watercolors.
When Fred began his battle with Alzheimer’s, she became his dedicated primary caregiver.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 1 p.m. at Coventry Village, 7707 N. Brookline Dr., Madison, WI 53719.

John ‘Stoneman’ Filtz Sr.

John “Stoneman” Filtz Sr., of Watersmeet, Mich., and formerly of Stevens Point, died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home. He was 84.
Mr. Filtz was under the care of his family and Regional Hospice Services in Bessemer, Mich.  
Mr. Filtz was born May 14, 1931, in Bevent. He is the son of the late Peter and Johanna (née Cychosz) Filtz.  
He married Marge Molnar Sept. 17, 1955, in South Milwaukee.
Mr. Filtz was a home builder for many years in the Stevens Point area. He was a skilled mason and loved to split fieldstone.
He also helped with the gravel and stone quarry of Pitlik & Wick Inc. in Watersmeet for over 10 years.
Mr. Filtz enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, fishing, winters in Arizona, trips to Canada, and spending time with his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, John Jr. (Ann) of Custer, Jerry (Mickey) of Plover, and Andy (Wanda Ashbeck) of Custer; three daughters, Debbie (Bob) of Milwaukee, Christine “Cookie” (Bob) Nichols of Plano, Texas, and Lisa (Frank Jr.) Pisarski of Junction City;  12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 
A funeral Mass was held April 9 at Holy Spirit Parish in Stevens Point.

Jim Croker

Jim Croker, a lifelong resident of Eagle River, died Friday, April 8, 2016, in Eagle River. He was 80.
Mr. Croker was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Eagle River to William and Beatrice (née Fenn) Croker. 
He was a master electrician and gunsmith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and taking photographs. His favorite things to read were gun magazines. He used to teach hunter safety. 
Mr. Croker served as a Lincoln town supervisor and served 50 years on the Vilas County Fair Board. He also served as board president for a time.
He served in the U.S. Army. 
Mr. Croker was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jimmy Alan; one sister, Dorothy Kuran; and one grandchild. 
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen, of Eagle River; five daughters, Barbara (Terry) Thiessen, Judy (Cass) Braaten, Patricia Byrd, Cindy (Cory) Scott and Michelle (David) Kubsch, all of Eagle River; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 14, at 11 a.m., at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m., until the time of the service.

Fred C. Novak

Fred C. Novak, a longtime resident of Conover, died Monday, March 21, 2016, at his home. He was 86.
Mr. Novak was born April 14, 1929, in Milwaukee.  
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  
He was a prominent real estate broker in Milwaukee in the 1950s and moved to Conover in the 1960s where he became an area businessman in the leasing and staffing businesses.  
He was an avid sportsman and hunter, and especially enjoyed moose hunting in Montana, fishing in Canada and Wisconsin, South Dakota bird hunting and Wisconsin deer hunting. He enjoyed his many dogs throughout his lifetime. 
Mr. Novak is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Clearwater, Fla.; three stepchildren, Michael, Dan and Heidi; four grandchildren; and many friends.  
Private services were held.

Milton M. Jennings

Milton M. Jennings, of Crystal Falls, Mich., died Friday, March 18, 2016, at Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls. He was 93.
Mr. Jennings was born June 4, 1922, in Titusville, Pa., to Clifford and Nellie (née Thomas) Jennings. 
He attended Titusville public schools, graduating from high school in 1942. 
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1945. 
Mr. Jennings was the owner and operator of the NAPA Auto Parts store in Land O’ Lakes from 1984 until his retirement in 1991. 
In his free time, he enjoyed life on a small lake near Watersmeet, Mich. 
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lola; his parents; and one son, Terry.
He is survived by one daughter, Susan Atkinson, of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; one daughter-in-law, Wanda Jennings, of Peachtree City, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
At Mr. Jennings’ request, there will be no funeral services.

Raymond James Gross

Raymond James Gross, 80, of Wau­sau, Wis., passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1935, in Marshfield, Wis., the son of Raymond F. and Hallie (Beiser) Gross.
Always an athlete, Ray was a graduate of Stratford High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He went on to play basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he graduated in 1959, with a degree in physical education.
In 1958, he married Sandra Lee Clifton of Stratford Wis., and they were married for 58 years. 
Ray had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, boating and spending time up north at the lodge with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; and five children, Lorie Gross of Tamarac, Fla., Wendy (Clark) Jasurda of Wausau, Jim (Bridget) Gross of Chicago, Ill., Carrie (Harry) Strickland of Three Lakes, Wis., and Cathy (Scott) Hagel of Young America, Minn.
Ray had 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Laura), Hannah, Eli, Ella, Ashley, Kelley, Hallie, Marin, Paige, Josie and Gabe; and two great-grandchildren, Megan and Harper.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Hallie Gross; a brother, George; and mother and father-in-law, Ken and Lucille Clifton.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 16, at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, 3200 North Mountain Road, Wausau. The Rev. Craig Swen­son officiated.
Brainard Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Jean Hansen

Jean Hansen of Conover, Wis., passed away on Jan. 4, 2016.
Jean worked for the Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department as the Oneida County Conservationist.
Survivors include her mother, Marion Sadauskas of Conover; sisters, Joyce Sadauskas of Leesburg, Fla., Michele Sadauskas of Glidden, Wis., and Jerri Peckey of Sparta, Wis., and her dog, Willow, and cat, Sweetpea.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Sadauskas.
She had no choice when the time came to leave the life she loved and the people and places she treasured most; her family, her friends, her home in the woods, the prairie grasses at Trempealeau National Wildlife Preserve, the lighthouses of Door County and of Maine.
Her spirit will live on along the shoreline projects of her favorite career, on the wings of the migrating tundra swans along the Mississippi, the breeze-blown waves of lakes and rivers she fished, and in the heart and memories of her family, friends, and her beloved dog, Willow.

Harry E. Cooper Jr.

Harry E. Cooper Jr., age 90, of Eagle River, Wis., passed away on April 16, 2016.
Harry, son of the late Harry E. Cooper Sr. and Kathleen (Madden) Cooper, was born in Racine, Wis., on Sept. 13, 1925, and attended Washington Park High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a top turret gunner on a Douglas A-20 in the South Pacific during World War II.
Harry wed Rosemary Potthast of Racine in July of 1948.
He joined the Racine Fire Department in 1951, and served the city of Racine for 30 years, retiring from the department as the Captain of Engine Company #6 in May 1981.
Rosemary and Harry moved to Eagle River in 1983.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Lawrence.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; and his six children, Thomas (Jacqueline) of Cape Coral, Fla., Gary (Sue) of Racine, Michael (Liana) of Black Duck, Minn., Kathleen (Ted Czebotar), formerly of Racine, Patricia (Matt Montemurro) of Racine and Pamela (Mike Grmick) of Conover, Wis.
He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the caretakers at both Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital and Dr. Kate Hospice for their compassionate care and assistance.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Frank R. Borkowicz

Frank R. Borkowicz, a resident of Eagle River for over 30 years, died Friday, April 15, 2016, at his home. He was 91.
Mr. Borkowicz was born in Milwaukee Aug. 31, 1924, to Richard and Barbara Borko­wicz. 
He graduated from Pulaski High School in Milwaukee. 
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater, specifically New Guinea and the Philippines. 
He married Dorothy Adamski Feb. 8, 1947, in Milwaukee. 
Mr. Borkowicz worked as an engineer for the Milwaukee Public School system for many years. He served as vice president for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 950 Milwaukee School Board and as the president of Muskellunge Lake Association. 
He was a member of AMVETS Memorial Post 60 in Milwaukee and a member of St. Germain PrimeTimers. 
He served as an usher at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slovak Catholic Church in Milwaukee for over 20 years. He also volunteered his time as a Boy Scout leader in Milwaukee and a driver for the Vilas County Commission on Aging in Eagle River. 
Mr. Borkowicz is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, of Eagle River; one son, Ron (Jeanne), of Appleton; one daughter, Geri (Jeff) Ulatowski of Clover, S.C.; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren. 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. 
A memorial service also will be held in Milwaukee at a later date.

Leonard B. Bollig, of Madison, died Friday, March 18, 2016, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison. He was 96.
Mr. Bollig was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Cross Plains to Fred and Clara (née Brunner) Bollig.
He married Delores Acker June 4, 1946, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ashton.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Africa as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Bollig owned a service station and worked as an auto mechanic in Madison and Black Earth, and as a maintenance mechanic at the Baraboo Powder Plant and Waunakee Canning Co.
He enjoyed working on steam engines, fishing and storytelling.
He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Middleton and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years; his parents; one brother, Otto; one infant son, Joseph; one son-in-law, Dave Peterson; four brothers, Robert, Herbert, Edward and Raymond; and three sisters, Katie Kalscheur, Theresa Ripp and Mary Haack.
He is survived by one son, Steve, of Woodstock, Ill.; six daughters, Bonnie (Geoff) Harrington, of Ridgefield, Conn., Barb (Steve) Pitterle, of St. Germain, Lorraine (Bill Lang) Bollig, of Cross Plains, Bev (Ed) Kekec, of Frontenac, Mo., Patty Peterson, of Windsor, and Debra (Dave) Keller, of Madison; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Catholic Church in Middleton Friday, April 29, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tait Schroeder presiding. 
Visitation will be held at Gunderson West Funeral and Cremation Care in Middleton Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 7 p.m., and also at the church Friday from 10 a.m., until the time of the service.
Mr. Bollig will be accorded military rites and inurnment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Ashton. 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to St. Mary’s Care Center. Online condolences may be offered at gundersonfh.
